Let's climb the second highest mountain in Sri Lanka, Kirigalpotta

If You like Hiking, you should definitely climb kirigalpotta mountain. This mountain range is situated close to Hortanthenna National Park in Nuwara Eliya District. Therefore, you do not need to set aside separate dates for the journey. As part of your journey to Hortanthenna, you can cross the Milky Way.

Kirigalpotta is considered as the tallest open air in Sri Lanka. The elevation is 2388 meters above sea level. The mountain climbing is an amazing experience. If you are looking for this mountain to climb, the best time is between February-April and July-September. The reason is that there was much dryness in those days. Note that this mountain top is not an ideal place for camping. This is because the high wind speed at the top of the mountain is very high. There is not enough space on the top of the mountain.

The distance from Hortanthenna to the top of this mountain is about 8 km. If you go to this mountain it is best to get permission from an officer in charge of Hortanthenna. Because leopards can be found around this mountain. There is a clear foot path to get to the mountain. The climb is not that difficult, and in some cases, you have to cross the steep rock. If you are going to this mountain it is best to go early. It takes about 6 hours to get to the top of the mountain. Also bring plenty of water and food.

The mountain is called the Milkpot, because the rock on one side of the mountain shines in the sun. The Kehelgamuwa Oya, a tributary of the Kelani River and the Agra Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, were created from the surrounding Hortantenna. The view to the top of the mountain is also beautiful.

So, if you are going to Hortanthenna National Park, don't forget to climb the Kirikalpotha mountain top.
